“Sweet doesn’t even begin to describe it!”

“This is truly an amazing bass. It’s almost like a “bass within a bass”. When you play it quietly it has all the clarity you’d expect from a good set of electronic pickups – but when you play it a little harder, the semi-hollow-body sound chamber starts kicking in and the whole bass starts singing. It’s a remarkable level of control and expression. In fact it’s a remarkable level of physics – but all my ear knows is that it sounds GREAT, and Ken’s brought the control of all that right to my fingertips. I ’m looking forward to recording with it! ” Brian Castle Nov 2010

One day, back in 1998, I was hiking along a creek in the redwood forest near Big Sur, Ca. when I found a small root burl and thought it would be fun to make a bass out of it.

The shape evolved into something quite different than what I had originally planned.  Though in essence, this basic bass instrument is fantastically light weight, easy to play, and the tone is warm and rich. I have kept this bass as my personal bass for the past 10 years.

I’ve recently re-oiled  and polished the finish and replaced the original Bartolini with Lane Poor pickup, and back to a Bartolini BBCX quad coil pickup with a redwood burl cover.

It makes me laugh when I hear some of the comments people make about this bass. Some people hate it, and some people love it. However there is only one bass like this, and it is truly magical. There are inclusions that God intended through the bass where light shines. This bass has been passive for the first 12 years so I thought I would install a by-passable pre-amp.  —Ken Bebensee

“This is a stunning instrument-a true model of custom bass work artistry! I own a few very high-end basses-MTD USA, Roscoe, Warwick & a Pedulla– this bass is one of my favorites–remarkably responsive & versatile, feels so wonderful in my hands & plays itself. It’s cut in such a way that you yearn to hold & keep it in your hands forever–can’t say enough good things about this ‘sweetheart’ of a bass. Thank You Ken!” —Barry Abramowitz
